How to hold Chopsticks
The much-anticipated event on Sunday, June 3, was well attended despite the prospects of a summer sun blazing with all its might! (Maybe Icekraft was chosen as the venue for a reason, don’t you think:p)
The event started with everyone getting a pair of Hashi each to practise with. The method of holding chopsticks was first demonstrated by Anonna in a step-by-step process with the others following her lead. Bowls of nuts were then placed in front of everyone. The participants had to pick the nuts using Hashi and drop them into an empty bowl placed beside. Getting a firm grip on the Hashi and using it is bound to take time at first. That said, quite a few of the participants got it right in very less attempts! Good job!
With Anonna and Gaku San explaining the ‘Dos and Don’ts’ of using Hashi and the reason why certain actions are considered ‘Bad Manners’ in Japan, the participants got a clearer picture of another facet of Nihonbunka. All seemed to have a good time trying to out-do one another in picking up nuts and some snacks with the chopsticks, duly captured on camera.
Thanks for coming, everyone! We look forward to seeing you all at the next club event on Sunday, June 10.
Tip: It’s a good idea to brush up Hiragana reading skills for the next event.
