Tanabata七夕 is a very important festival for the Japanese and takes place on the 7th of July every year, the day Orihime織姫 and Hikoboshi彦星 (characters from Japanese mythology; now names of stars) are fabled to meet. To celebrate their celestial meeting, people write wishes on colourful paper called Tanzaku短冊 and hang them from bamboo branches. It is believed that doing so would make those wishes come true.
