禁止 means PROHIBITION. This word is used when an act is strictly prohibited. You would see 禁止 being used by itself without any supportive sentence, when the prohibition needs your full attention. It is very similar to the “No Smoking” signs.
「禁」means Prohitbition, Ban, Forbid
Onyomi: キン in 禁止（きんし）Prohibition, 禁煙（きんえん）No smoking, 禁句（きんく）Taboo
Kunyomi: きん・じる in 禁じる（きんじる）to prohibit; to forbid
Onyomi: シ in 中止（ちゅうし）suspension; discontinuation,
Kunyomi: と・まる in 止まる something stops, と・める in 止める to stop something, や・める in 止める to quit, や・む in 止む to cease, and many more readings you’ll learn on your language journey
